The first counter
A single case of hooks, line and floats in Joydebpur Moddho-Bazar, serving people fishing the beels on foot.
We sell fishing tackle. We also fish, which is the only reason we know which of it is worth selling.
BD Fishing Store opened in Joydebpur Moddho-Bazar in the mid-1980s, selling hooks, line and bamboo rods to people fishing the beels around Gazipur. The shop has moved twice since then and the stock has changed completely. The way it works has not.
Everything on these shelves has been handled by someone here before it was ordered in quantity. If a rod flexes wrong, if a reel seat rattles, if a spool of line goes brittle after one hot season, we stop stocking it. That is a slower way to build a catalogue than buying whatever a distributor is pushing, and it is why the list is shorter than you might expect.
Most of our customers still walk in. They put a rod together on the counter, feel the weight of it, and ask what we would use. The website exists so the people who cannot get to Gazipur can ask the same question and get the same answer.

The shop, counted up.
The turns that changed what we stock.

Imported carbon rods and spinning reels arrive in Bangladesh at a price ordinary anglers can meet. The shop doubles in size to hold them.
We start matching rod, reel and line ourselves and selling them as one box, because too many first-time buyers were leaving with parts that did not suit each other.
Demand shifts towards active lure fishing. Hard baits, soft plastics and baitcasting reels become a department of their own rather than a shelf.
Orders start going out to all 64 districts, with cash on delivery, so the advice at the counter is no longer only for people who can reach Gazipur.
The full catalogue goes on the web, alongside the YouTube channel where we show the tackle actually being fished rather than photographed on a table.
Four things decide whether we order something a second time. None of them is the margin.
Ask for any of them by name.
Took over the counter from his father. Fishes the Turag most Fridays and will talk about bottom rods for longer than you have time for.
Handles the lure department and most of the rod questions. If you want to know which hard bait moves fish in murky water, he is the one to ask.
Runs the online orders and the confirmation calls. She is the voice on the phone when your parcel is about to go out.
Most people who walk into this shop are not looking for the most expensive rod. They are looking for the rod that will not let them down on the water they actually fish, at a price that leaves something over for line and hooks. That is a harder question than it sounds, and it is the one we answer all day.
The water around Gazipur is mostly warm, often murky, and full of fish that fight harder than their size suggests. Tackle designed for clear cold rivers elsewhere frequently makes no sense here. We stock for the conditions in front of us, which is why the catalogue leans towards forgiving rods, metal-bodied reels and line you can replace cheaply every season.
If you are starting out, a combo package removes the guesswork: the rod, reel and line are already matched, and the box includes enough terminal tackle to fish the same afternoon. If you have been fishing for years, come in with a question and we will give you a straight answer, including when the answer is that you do not need the thing you came in for.
Everything we sell online ships from the same shelves the shop sells from. You can call 01621 747 888 before, during or after an order, and speak to whoever happens to be behind the counter.
